Advancing decent work in supply chains through sectoral social dialogue
The European Commission presented its Communication on Decent Work Worldwide on 23 February 2022. The Communication sets out an EU toolbox to promote decent work worldwide, which includes the proposed new Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence that will place the European Union (EU) at the forefront of global efforts to make due diligence mandatory for businesses. To support the efforts of European employers and workers to navigate this complex context and advance decent work worldwide, the Communication includes in section 3.4 an offer of support to social partners in the European Sectoral Social Dialogue Committees (SSDCs) to launch activities to foster responsible, inclusive and sustainable supply chains. The present project has been developed in collaboration with DG Employment to offer ILO support to European SSDCs that will want such support. In doing so, the ILO will draw on its unique mandate, normative framework, sector-specific knowledge and experience with sectoral social dialogue. The project will rely on tried and tested ILO knowledge, instruments and approaches to advance decent work and responsible business conduct across sectors as well guidance and tools to address sector-specific challenges and opportunities. The aim is to ensure that European social partners are better equipped and more engaged in efforts to advance responsible business conduct, due diligence, decent work and international labour standards in more resilient, inclusive and sustainable supply chains. The proposed project will be implemented by the ILO’s Sectoral Policies Department (SECTOR). The proposed time frame is two years starting in October 2022. The proposed contribution from the EC is €300.000.
