Women Work Greener and Better – Green Jobs for Women and Youth in the Saloum Delta
The “Women Work Greener and Better - Green jobs for women and youth in the Saloum Delta” project is an ILO intervention designed within the framework of the BMZ’s Special Initiative on training and job creation and the UN-wide Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions and the Climate Action for Jobs Initiative. This project addresses the climate change challenges and decent work deficits in the mangrove Saloum Delta in Senegal where in particular women are engaged in subsistence farming, aquaculture and dead wood collection. Over 36 months and a budget of 4 million EUR, this project will improve value chains and create decent jobs opportunities for women and youth through a market systems development approach and concretely establishing cooperatives and microenterprises. Meanwhile access to social protection benefits will reduce the risks they face and help secure and sustain these livelihoods. Promoting green entrepreneurship will support economic diversification and increase the demand for mangrove produce and services while creating job opportunities for young men and women (age 15-24). Ultimately, this Project combines the SI specific interventions such as cooperation with medium-sized and international companies and value chains development for green jobs creation, with existing efforts by the ILO and other actors to create an enabling environment for sustainable development in Senegal.
