Enhancing Digital Inclusion and E-formality among women entrepreneurs in Tanzania
Based on national definitions and statistics, employment in the informal economy in Tanzania has increased from 22 per cent in 2014 to 29.4 per cent in 2020/21, with more women than men exposed to informality. This RBSA-funded intervention aims to improve access to financial and non-financial services, strengthen capacities and formalize informal small businesses and the employment arrangements of the workers they employ, including through the digitalization of their business operations. Moreover, this intervention supports the transition to formality of workers in informal employment in formal enterprises and households, particularly women entrepreneurs in the Kigoma region. The intervention’s main partners include: Prime Minister's Office - Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disability; President's Office - Regional Administration and Local Government; Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology; Tanzania Women Chamber of Commerce; Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission; Association of Tanzania Employers; Trade Union Congress of Tanzania; Confederation of Informal Sector Organizations; VIBINDO Society; and UN agencies participating in the UN Kigoma Joint Programme. The ultimate beneficiaries are informal micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly those led by women and youth, informal women finance groups, informal women entrepreneur associations, and their apex organizations. The expected results of the intervention are: 1) Informal operators have improved access to financial and non-financial services and strengthened capacities to run their businesses; 2) businesses, and the workers they employ, are formalized; and 3) workers’ organizations support the formalization of informal employment in formal enterprises and households.
