Promoting Women at work through professional child care services in Bangladesh
This intervention aims to help the Bangladeshi government build a stronger framework to make quality childcare services available and affordable in line with current childcare-related laws and the Workers with Family Responsibility Convention, 1981 (C 156). It also aims to promote female formal employment by lessening their unpaid childcare burden and to improve recognition of care work. The intervention partners include: the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, the employers’ and workers’ organizations. The ILO, in collaboration with other UN agencies, provides technical assistance to: develop coordination systems on building policies, regulations and guidelines for childcare services targeting women workers across various sectors, including piloting six model childcare centres; assess the effectiveness of the standards, regulations, and guidelines and develop the standardized qualification framework for childcare professionals and its roll out through the registered training providers. The expected results of this intervention include: 1) responsive policies and regulations for decent work for childcare workers are developed, including effective guidelines and regulations for quality and affordable childcare services; 2) streamlined mechanisms for improved availability of childcare are in place; and 3) capacities of governmental institutions, social partners and technical skills providers institutions are strengthened.
