Ending Child Labour in Supply Chains

The "Ending Child Labour in Supply Chains" project brings together the the ILO (lead) with the FAO, UNICEF and the ITC. It will focus on tackling the root causes of child labour in the coffee supply chain and leveraging existing efforts in the minerals supply chain, particularly in cobalt. The strategy will convene and seek the active of supply chains actors at the global (e.g., IOE, ITUC, multinationals, financial institutions), regional, national, and local level (Ministries of Labour, Trade, Agriculture, Education, trade unions and employers’ organizations, cooperatives, youth organizations). The project will follow both an area-based approach, as well as a supply chain approach, with close linkages to other supply chains, possibly tea and/or other coffee-associated crops (Uganda) and fruits and/or other coffee-associated crops (Honduras). Within this approach, the interventions will target all forms of child labour in the given geographical location, considering all violations of child rights on similar strength, and build the capacity of local communities to deliver interventions against child labour in any sector. The Action will use the leverage of global and regional supply chain actors to have an impact on coffee and other commodities. It will be anchored in existing mechanisms to bring all actors of the supply chain together at the country level (or promote or create such a mechanism where it is not functional or non-existent). The Action is aligned with the ILO 8.7 Accelerator Lab strategy. The project strategy is built around the following four result areas (pillars): 1. “Knowledge”: Knowledge base on root causes and recommendations to address child labour in coffee and other supply chains strengthened. (national level) 2. “Solutions”: Integrated and area-based model to eliminate child labour in the coffee supply chain established for replication. (national level) 3. “Partnership”: Alliance 8.7 Action Group on Supply Chains and other global partnerships to eliminate child labour in supply chains strengthened. (global level) 4. “Mining”: Capacity to tackle child labour in mining supply chains are strengthened. (national level)
