Empowerment of rural informal workers through advocacy, skills development and outreach
This project aims to strengthen organisational capacity of trade unions in Fiji and Papua New Guinea (PNG) through organising activities, especially in informal/rural economy and hence providing better services to unionised workers in the economy. The project will facilitate the transition of workers in the informal/rural economy towards formality, through (1) advocacy of ILO’s Transition from the informal to the formal economy Recommendation, 2015 (No. 204) and relevant national laws, ie., the Informal Sector Development and Control Act 2004 in PNG and the Employment Relations Act 2007 in Fiji; (ii) provision of skills and vocational training and support the formation of social and solidarity enterprises (associations/ cooperatives); and promotion of social dialogue among relevant stakeholders; (iii) formation of workers’ organisations through organising activities. This project will be implemented in partnership with Fiji Trade Union Congress (FTUC) and Papua New Guinea Trade Union congress (PNGTUC), which are major national trade union organisations in Fiji and PNG, respectively. In the end, the beneficiaries will increase voice and representation in workplaces and society and be able to influence policies to be more inclusive for the vulnerable rural and informal workers.
