Delivering a Gender-Transformative Just Transition
To tackle pressing environmental challenges like climate change, pollution and plummeting biodiversity, nations and businesses need to transition towards greener, resilient, and climate-neutral economies and societies. A Just Transition means greening the economy in a way that is as fair and inclusive as possible to everyone concerned, creating decent work opportunities, and leaving no one behind as stated in the ILO Guidelines for a just transition towards environmentally sustainable economies and societies for all adopted in 2015. The momentum around the gender dimension of just transition has been growing as highlighted during COP27 and a number of countries have been making commitments around gender and climate change. Several enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) include references to just transition and/or gender considerations and some countries have developed Gender and Climate Change Action Plans. At the same time there appears to be considerable gaps in capacity on how to turn such commitments to systematic policy action. It is in this context that the ILO Gender Equality Diversity and Inclusion Branch and the Green Jobs Programme are developing a guide to contribute to addressing this gap. The guide aims to give effect to commitments on gender equality for a just transition in climate action.
