Combatting descent-based slavery in Mali
In Mali hereditary servitude is persistent due to traditional and religious beliefs providing the roots for a form of social domination, and to a lack of education and awareness of the issue. There are inherent struggle to exercise civil rights, including access to civil status documentations, land ownership and education. Despite some recent efforts to end impunity, descent-based slavery and the resulting violence persists. The project aims to contribute to national efforts to combat descent-based slavery in Mali, by proposing viable and practical actions to bring immediate, tangible, and measurable benefits that would contribute to more systemic reforms in the longer term.
