Surgical instruments employer competitiveness and attractiveness in Pakistan (the “Activities”)
The ILO Country Office for Pakistan, with financial support from the International Trade Centre's UK Trade Partnerships (UKTP) Programme and as an implementing partner of the UK's Trade Centre of Expertise, addresses specific challenges in Pakistan’s surgical instruments manufacturing sector. The ILO's intervention involves three main components: 1. Assessment, Consultations, and Communications: The ILO conducts a rapid assessment to identify decent work deficits, focusing on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work to facilitate consultations among tripartite stakeholders (workers, employers, and government) and develop short-term, medium-term, and long-term actions. 2. Occupational Safety and Health: The ILO pilots training programs to address identified hazards, risks, and areas for improvement in the workplace, leading to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) action plans. Working with its social partners, the ILO promotes the establishment of OSH committees in manufacturing units, fosters a reporting culture, and collaborates with stakeholders to develop or reform OSH regulations and standards specific to the sector. 3. Worker Rights Awareness and Skills Development: Through its social partners, the ILO launches an awareness campaign on workers' rights, gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace. The campaign is strengthened by providing training on workers' rights, collective bargaining, negotiation skills, and conflict resolution to empower workers and establish communication channels between management and worker representatives. These activities are conducted closely with various local stakeholders to ensure ownership and sustainability within Sialkot’s surgical instrument manufacturing sector. The goal is to promote decent work, improve workplace safety, and empower workers in this industry, contributing to sustainable and inclusive growth under the DWCP and UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for Pakistan.
