Project to Strengthen Agricultural Opportunities Through Training and Technological Investment (PROFIT) – Phase II
PROJECT TO STRENGTHEN AGRICULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGICAL INVESTMENT (PROFIT) – PHASE II One of the most important root causes of rural poverty and decent work deficits in Haiti is low productivity in the agriculture sector. Around 60% of the households in the Grand’Anse and Southern Departments live mainly from agricultural products. Despite their hard work, 56% live on less than US$2.44 a day. In early 2021 the ILO started implementing the Project to Strengthen Agricultural Opportunities Through Training and Technological Investment (PROFIT) project, funded by the Kingdom of Norway. This is a three-year project with the aim to improve living conditions of 1 000 small producers in the Southern and Grand’Anse Departments of Haiti, because of increased sales of products (cocoa and breadfruit) with higher value addition. To build on the achievements and the lessons learned from the first phase of PROFIT, and ensure sustainability of the activities by addressing the most severe obstacles to productivity growth and value chain upgrading in cocoa and breadfruit in Haiti, the ILO and WFP collaborate on a four-year intervention in the Grand‘Anse department aimed to significantly improve rural livelihoods of all beneficiaries thanks to better production techniques and post-harvest management, more efficient logistical arrangements and increased market access for cocoa and breadfruit products with higher value addition, while reinforcing food security and women economic autonomy. The project continues and scales-up PROFIT’s work on upgrading productivity and working conditions in the cocoa and breadfruit value chains. The number of direct beneficiaries would increase up to at least 2,000 small producers (in the Grand’Anse department) which will receive direct assistance and improved business-related services. Throughout the implementation of this second phase of the PROFIT project, at least 50% of beneficiaries are women.
