ILO Employment Intensive Investment Programme (EIIP) Response to Western Afghanistan Earthquake: Building Back Better
A series of earthquakes and aftershocks affected the Western Region of Afghanistan destroying homes, lives, infrastructure and livelihoods in 2023. An assessment will be conducted to identify areas within employment intensive investment programmes which can provide more employment opportunities in recovery interventions and that can be linked to longer time livelihoods. Based on the outcome of the assessment, Employment Intensive Investment Programme interventions will then be implemented in close collaboration with social partners and other UNAFPs within a targeted area to enable recovery of critical damaged community and public investments infrastructure works. The project aims to provide immediate income support and livelihood recovery for the earthquake survivors through short-term employment opportunities in labour-intensive community and public works, as well as to rehabilitate or reconstruct essential basic infrastructure and services that have been damaged or destroyed by the earthquakes, such as roads, water reservoirs, water supply systems, irrigation channels, schools, health clinics, latrines etc.
