Promoting employment and decent work in Afghanistan through the humanitarian-development-peace nexus: Essential services

The "Promoting employment and decent work in Afghanistan through the humanitarian-development-peace nexus: Essential Services" project identifies, designs and implements intervention strategies aimed to effectively support the earthquake affected communities, displaced persons, women and persons with disabilities who were severely affected by the series of earthquakes and aftershocks that destroyed homes, lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods in Western Region of Afghanistan in their recovery. Assessments are made to identify areas which can provide more employment opportunities in recovery interventions and that can be linked to longer term livelihoods. The findings are to be used to design and implement intervention and widely disseminated with other stakeholders to facilitate other possible longer-term interventions that seek to enable recovery and social cohesion at a larger scale. The project will in parallel consult with the Herat Provincial Development Committees and Khusk District Authorities to priority infrastructure to be included in the project. In addition, the project works on “push” tailored interventions aimed at developing the skills and capacities of the target group to engage with the market, including women’s entrepreneurship development, or by strengthening collective entrepreneurship and social cohesion. The targeted beneficiaries are within the communities that have been identified through the joint Employment Intensive Investments Programme (EIIP) and Entrepreneurship Development (ED) intervention, comprising households of the earthquake affected community members, while focusing on women beneficiaries, and who may be related to the beneficiaries identified through the EIIP project.
