Creating decent work opportunities for domestic and community-based care workers through transformative actions for gender equality in Sri Lanka
This intervention addresses the pressing issues of social protection and gender inequality in Sri Lanka’s labour market, focusing on the care economy. It aims to facilitate formalization of domestic workers and improve the conditions of work and valuing of community-based care workers, through extending social protection coverage and promoting decent work in the care economy. The intervention targets domestic and community-based care workers, a vulnerable segment of the workforce lacking financial security and recognition of their critical service to society and the economy. Key areas of focus include designing a maternity insurance scheme, piloting a digital registration application for domestic workers, and adopting an action plan for decent work in the care. Collaborating partners include the Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment, domestic workers' organizations, social partners and other relevant stakeholders. The expected results encompass strengthened income guarantees for domestic workers and community-based care workers, increased social protection coverage, and enhanced labour force participation of women, in an enabling environment for care work in Sri Lanka.
