Delivering on national commitments: Korea’s support to the implementation of the Global Accelerator
The Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions (GA) helps to bridge the global jobs and social protection gaps, with 453 million people looking for a job but not able to find one and over 4 billion people currently excluded from social protection. The GA was launched in September 2021 by the UN Secretary-General and represents one of the High-Impact Initiatives to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs. The GA works in selected ‘pathfinder’ countries that have made a high-level commitment to accelerating jobs and social protection for just transitions. These countries have adopted or are in the process of developing “roadmaps” which identify priority action areas and strategic approaches to accelerate jobs and social protection outcomes. The Global Accelerator has gained significant momentum and high-level support from governments, IFIs, and social partners. To facilitate this complex and ambitious programme, a Technical Support Facility (TSF) has been set up as the ‘support center’ of the GA, extending technical support to pathfinder countries and acting as technical secretariat for its global governance mechanism. Global and country-level commitment to the GA has been achieved. This project is therefore critical for the ILO to maintain and expand its technical leadership and ensure that the TSF can respond to an increased demand from pathfinder countries. The project focuses on two policy areas that are “catalytic” to the achievement of the global GA goals: labour market policies, including skills and social protection linkages, and macro-structural policies, including on fiscal space and structural transformation.
