Support to the formalization of small economic units and workers in the waste management value chain within the Waterberg District.

The Waterberg District in Tanzania faces significant challenges of poverty, unemployment and underemployment, which disproportionately affect women, youth and other vulnerable groups. The local economy is based on mining, tourism and agriculture, with mining being a major contributor. Poor waste management practices in these sectors pose environmental risks. Through this intervention, the ILO aims to strengthen the capacity of the tripartite constituents in the Lephalale and Mokgalakwena communities to address social and environmental challenges, including unemployment, informality and poor waste management. The intervention intends specifically to promote programmes to help businesses and waste pickers, with a view to adopting circular business models and facilitating the transition to the formal economy. This is in line with national and district-level development priorities linked to the promotion of job-rich and sustainable economic growth. The ultimate beneficiaries of the intervention are informal workers, especially young women, including those with disabilities, in waste picking. The intervention will work with various sectoral departments at national and local levels, as well as with private sector entities in the mining sector. The intervention is designed to achieve key results including the adoption of recycling/upcycling strategies, increased participation of waste pickers in the waste management value chain, an enabling environment for a circular economy, and strengthened capacity of local technical vocational education and training institutions to provide relevant skills.
