Facilitating Economic Recovery and Labour Rights in the OPT: Strengthening Capacity of Employers and Workers Organizations for a more effective and coherent crisis response across the Humanitarian, Development and Peace Nexus

This intervention economically supports displaced communities affected by the conflict in the Gaza Strip by offering them short-term employment opportunities to generate income for sustaining their livelihoods. This is achieved in collaboration with UNDP through “cash-for-work” initiatives under emergency employment schemes in critical services of healthcare and solid waste management. The intervention is in line with Recommendation 205 on "Employment and Decent Work for Peace and Resilience” and responds to the recommendations arising from the ILO’s Governing Body decisions in November 2023 and March 2024 to support constituents to mitigate the devastating impact of the crisis and work within the wider context of the UN’s relief and recovery programmes. The collaborating partners include UNDP; the Palestinian Employment Fund (PEF), a tripartite, national, training and employment body; the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU); the Gaza Cultural and Development Group (GCDG), a local NGO; the Joint Services Council for Solid Waste Management, representatives from multiple sectors, including local government, environmental agencies, and international organizations. The key expected results are two-fold: short-term, decent employment in healthcare and solid waste management provided to men and women in Gaza to address immediate economic needs and restoration of critical services; national implementing partners have enhanced capacities and knowledge on decent work principles and occupational safety and health measures.
