Improving Workers Rights in Rural Sectors of the Indo-Pacific with a focus on Women – Component Fishing / Palm Oil

This is extension of project RAS/20/07/USA (108004) Improving Workers Rights in Rural Sectors of the Indo-Pacific with a focus on Women. IDN/24/52/USA: Improving Workers Rights in Rural Sectors of the Indo-Pacific with a focus on Women – Component Fishing / Palm Oil Background and Project Strategy: The Indonesia is the top beneficiaries of the US GSP trade preference programme, with agriculture, fishing and mining exports comprising a sizable part of their GDP. However, these sectors rely on millions of workers in rural communities, many of whom face poor working conditions and weak labour protection. In order to improve these workers’ rights, there is a need for improved strategic compliance planning and interventions on the part of labour inspectorates, in addition to leveraging partnerships with employers, workers and their organizations. The proposed Project’s objective is to contribute to improved adherence to labour standards in agriculture, fishing and mining in the Indonesia, with a focus on women workers. The Project will be able to contribute to improved adherence to labour standards in agriculture, fishing and mining in the Indonesia, with a focus on women workers. It will be able to do so if the ILO, through a process of social dialogue, supports the development of labour market institutions that can promote compliance to labour and OSH standards, including gender equality (especially equal pay for equal work and work of equal value and non discrimination in employment and occupation), at the local and national levels. Once such support is provided, then the government and social partners will be better capacitated to promote compliance within their respective mandates. This will lead to improved workers’ rights and decent working conditions for men and women workers, particularly in agriculture, fishing and mining in the Indonesia. This project will focus on improving workers rights in rural sectors of the Indonesia fishing/palm oil.
