Contributing to the consolidation of the national policy for the prevention and elimination of child labour in Colombia

This project will support the implementation of the third National Plan of Action for the Prevention and Eradication Child Labour in Colombia. The objectives are to: a) Strengthen national organizations’ capacity to implement the national plan for the prevention and elimination of the worst forms of child labour as part of an integrated national policy on childhood. b) Develop pilot experiences aimed at the prevention and elimination of the worst forms of child labour. The project will carry out activities both at the national level and in six municipalities prioritized by the National Plan. At the national level the project will strengthen the capacity of the National Coordinating Committee to create and implement national operating plans and budgets and to document and disseminate good practices. The project will support the National Committee in the implementation of ILO Convention No. 182 by providing technical assistance in the process of identification and designation of hazardous tasks and occupations that will be considered worst forms of child labour. The project will support the implementation of a national awareness raising campaign. At the municipal level the project will support the process of establishing municipal committees to combat child labour and the elaboration and implementation of municipal plans. The project will also implement four pilot action programmes to withdraw and prevent children from entering the worst forms of child labour. The project will benefit 440 children directly by either preventing or withdrawing the children from the worst forms of child labour. The project will be managed by the IPEC National Programme Manager in Colombia under the supervision of the IPEC Subregional Office in Lima. The donor contribution is US$778,400. The project duration is estimated at 26 months beginning January 2004.
