SAFE & ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY SHIP RECYCLING
The Safe and Environment-Friendly Ship Recycling Project started implementation in July 2003 and will come to an end in June 2007. Its main objectives are national legislative and policy framework reform and the enforcement of basic services for workers, as well as regulating and guiding activities in the ship-recycling industry. It also aims at: i) increased government commitment to adopt and implement international guidelines, Conventions/laws and national laws and regulations on ship recycling; and ii) ensuring safe and hygienic ship recycling with improved welfare and working conditions in ship-recycling communities and enterprises.The project has completed a baseline survey with the identification of training needs of the workers and prepared a training manual for ship-breaking workers. The project has implemented a series of training programmes for the project beneficiaries. A draft national guideline on ship recycling in Bangladesh is also being prepared during the project.
