description:
Too often, EOs make assumptions about the skills and experience of staff and, in particular, the mix of skill and knowledge across the team. UMFCCI has thought carefully about the mix of experience and expertise (though being able to recruit a larger team would allow them to broaden the experience and expertise further).
context:
An employers’ organisation team needs to be able to work with employers; to identify, frame and prioritise issues; to gather evidence; to prepare compelling policy positions; to engage in dialogue and advocacy; to develop and deliver services, especially training and information, to members. The team also needs excellent networks and to be able to develop and maintain new relationships. No single individual can do all this and it is tough to do in a small team.
success:
Success tends to come when employers’ organisations are very focused and are able to support their policy positions with persuasive evidence
challenges:
The team is still very small, so there is a need to balance the focus on policy and advocacy with the need to deliver training to employers.
administrative_issues:
The only implication is for the advice given to employers’ organisations. In this case, it appears as though the advice has been good and generally well received
comments:
The target is the EO but the beneficiaries are the private sector and potentially the workers when firms becomes more profitable and pay higher wages.
