title:
The skills development especially among young women and men is challenged by the bad reputation of the apprenticeship. Many employers exploit the trainees as cheap labour rather than investing in them as the future of the industry. Also, EOs recognize that there are problems that need to be solved to be able to attract young people to the industry. The Project has developed materials and webinars for the implementation of quality apprenticeship. This and the high value of training that combine theory and practice should be further promoted. Many countries have succeeded in this so there are experiences to build on for the ILO and constituents in future interventions.

action_plan:
ILO/Japan Multi-bilateral Programme's portfolio includes a project on skills development and responsible business conduct in these countries: Indonesia (focusing on electronics and electrical sector) and Thailand (focusing on automotive sector). The lessons learned and recommendations garnered from the InSIGHT projects will be applied in the implementation of this project.
comments:
Skills development through apprenticeship has, as is pointed out, lost its reputation due to misuse by employers, but if used well it can be a very effective means of getting young people into work, where unemployment is high. The project has developed materials for apprenticeships and successfully conducted webinars on the topic. We understand the importance of this work and would like to continue to implement and support these initiatives going forward.
