Recommendation 2: UN should use its convening power to influence the establishment of national social protection coordination structures in South Africa. These structures will be critical for completing all the JP’s work-in-progress and utilising results to influence policy and decision-making. These structures will also be essential in addressing fragmentation.

In the current context of South Africa, there is no established national coordination structure. Indeed, this recommendation is critical to address fragmentation and promote policy coherence. The Department of Social Development (DSD) performed this coordinating role during the implementation of the JP (as the parent Department and Chair of the UN SDG Fund). Since the JP’s work directly supported important social protection agendas of the Government, it is envisaged that the DSD will continue this coordination role and complete the JP’s immediate work-in-progress.
